What’s Going on in There?
The title of this music comes from the quality of exploring slowly through the darkness with just the light of your senses to guide you. That and the fact that when the music was recorded, most of the light in the room was coming from my effects pedal board.
The year is 2001, the 10’x10’ room of my home studio in Montrose, California is candle lit and crowded with the bodies and gear of my friends Brian McCowsky on 5-string fretless bass and Steve on the SPD-11 total percussion controller (aka The SPUD). An improvised jam session is about to begin. With the exception of the main riff of the track “Hall of Mirrors,” we have no idea what we are going to play. So we begin noodling and listening—always a good start.
The music that emerged over the next thirty five minutes was mostly in the style of progressive ambient rock. Here we have five dark and moody improvisations with electric guitar, bass and “drums.” Like walking through strange territories with a good guide, it’s easy to follow, yet full of surprises.
My friends and I have enjoyed listening to these “recordings” over the years and I hope that you will also.
